It was almost noon, and I was on my way to school. When I stepped into the lift, I met with a handsome little Indian boy who came up to my butt, carrying a bag that twice his size, adorned in school uniform complete with tie and black shoes.
Anyway, I couldnapos;t resist striking up a conversation with him. I love talking to children, they have this amazing ability to come up with the brightest things that us adults are just too busy to bother with.
Me: Hello. What time does your school start?
Boy: Usually yit starts at eight, but today ve yare starting later because there was an exam. That was all we could talk about because by then, weapos;d already reached the lobby. To no oneapos;s surprise, he ran off the moment the doors opened.
I am just amazed at his ability to string a proper sentence. I mean, by that age, I already was well-equipped with three-syllabic words that could blow adults away, but we all know I was (read: past tense) an exemplary student. (and that my parents sent me to Bri/tish Coun/cil and Lor/na Win/ston and we have a generally English-speaking environment at home). Nowadays, you get children who canapos;t pronounce words properly, let along speak in proper sentences.
I will not tolerate my children misprounouncing words, unless they have medically-certified lisps. When you come to my house for the annual Hari Raya visit in hopes of adding to your childrenapos;s education fund, you will never hear my children saying "Camat Ayee Ayer".
Then again, you get men at twenty-one treating women like babies. I have yet to find a context in which "u aru alik? u da mamam? boboi cayang geger." is acceptable, unless, maybe, youapos;ve lost your two front teeth. The policy-makers who came up with Bulan Bahasa are probably cringing in their seats, because the new generation of policy-makers would be most likely to change this decades-old campaign to "Ulan Ahasa".
I predict that with every generation, the front letter of every word would be dropped, and eventually, the lexicon will cease to exist, and Malay would be an extinct language, just like the dodo. Takkan Melayu Hilang Di Dunia.. Otak kau. Geger hampa.
